policy and strategyWhile prior to accession Poland was mainly an aid receiver, after the EU Enlargement the Central European largest country turned into an important aid donor, increasing its world prestige and not forgetting the problems of other relatively poor countries. Through extending the role played by the political actors, NGOs and other institutions in the field of development cooperation, the Polish government is actively seeking to achieve major goals in its foreign policy.The present strategy, carried out by the Polish Ministery of Foreign Affairs, outlines Poland's development and humanitarian aid framework and presents the actors involved in these fields, as well as the financial resources allocated by the government and the concerned NGOs on the aforementioned policy areas.
implementing organisationsThe Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs has played and still plays a major role in setting the development cooperation policy of Poland. Working in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme in Poland the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has released some relevant documents concerning Poland's development cooperation and the achievement of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals.PHO, the Polish Humanitarian Organisation, is a NGO which works within the country and abroad, amongst others in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan and Iran. PHO realises its mission by helping communities in crises to regain responsibility for their own future and become self-reliant. The Zagranica Group is a coalition of Polish NGOs operating for and in cooperation with foreign organisations and institutions, which concentrate their efforts on humanitarian aid, strengthening civil society, and democratisation.
