Networks and policy influence in international development

This month, the focus of the editorial relates to the seminar which is held at the occasion of the Euforic Annual General Meeting on June 2nd. The AGM addresses the role of information and communication in policy making. The authors put forward that the network concept is neither outdated, nor overhyped. They give several examples of the relevance of networks - including useful criteria - in a changing environment, both in terms of the issues at stake as to the global nature that they adopt.

2 July 2005: Make poverty history

This is the most important campaign event of 2005. Hopefully more than 250,000 will take to the streets of Edinburgh to let the G8 know what should be top of their agenda in 2005 - making poverty history! This year there are a number of really important moments when we need as many people as possible to make their voices heard. The people we need you to reach out to are some of the most powerful people in the world; not just because they are world leaders, but also because they have the chance to make a real and lasting change to our world. Without your support and voice they won't know just how important this issue is.

DSA-BOND conference on 3 June, at SOAS

This full-day event is on "The research / practice interface in 2005: actions for the year and beyond". The theme builds from the DSA's Annual Conference in November on "Bridging Research and Policy" and aims to give the day a practical focus which will be of interest to NGOs, consultants and the private sector.
The workshops will deal with (a) Constituency engagement, (b) NGOs and the private sector, (c) Scenario planning for development in 2030. (d) Managing research for impact, (e) Turning that insight into Impact; and (f) Freeing organisations to turn research into good practice.
There are still some places left, please register online or contact Frances Hill - for more information on 01288 331360 or email admin@devstud.org.uk. Closing date for registration is 27th May.

  • European conference on public awareness

The European Conference on Public Awareness and Development Education for North-South Solidarity, held on 19 and 20 May in Brussels, gathered delegates from national and supra-national administrations, NGOs and CSOs, and the media in a dynamic debate. On the premise that ODA levels should at least attain the 0.7% level, the recommendations formulated by the conference launched a strong appeal to give an enhanced attention to development awareness and education issues, in order to ensure the implementation of the MDGs to combat global poverty. This should happen at various levels and with increased means, including the relevant authorities and other stakeholders such as the media, enshrined in coherent policies and implemented in an effective way. All relevant information on the conference and the topic is available at www.euforic.org/awareness-sensibilisation.

Information strategies and policy influence: identifying effective networking and communication strategies in a European development context

On the threshold of the UK Presidency of the EU, the G8 and the MDG Summit, ODI and Euforic are organising a seminar in which the importance and opportunities of networking and Internet information for development policy will be explored. In the understanding that 2005 is a vital year for the future of European development cooperation, what are strategies to follow and mechanisms to use for being really effective in influencing development policy? Which information foraging strategies are used by politicians, researchers or lobbyist? What could the Internet information landscape look like in ten years from now and how could development organisations prepare themselves? Having a website is one, but the issue is what then: how to really bring information across and be influential. The seminar will bring together the experiences and expertise of ODI and a variety of cases from within the Euforic network.

  • OECD

    African Economic Outlook

The African Economic Outlook is an annual review of the recent economic situation and the likelyshort-term evolution of selected African countries. It is drawn from a country-by-country analysis based on a unique analytical design. This common framework includes a forecasting exercise for the current and the two following years using a simple macroeconomic model, together with an analysis of the social and political context. It also contains a comparative synthesis of African country prospects, placing the evolution of African economies in the world economic context. A statistical appendix completes the volume.
The African Economic Outlook is a joint project of the African Development Bank and the OECD Development Centre. The project, generously supported by the European Commission, combines the expertise accumulated by the OECD, which produces the OECD Economic Outlook twice a year, and the knowledge of the African Development Bank on African economies.
This volume will be of significant interest to decision makers in African and OECD countries, in both the public and private sectors, such as aid agencies, investors, and government officials of aid recipient countries.
